Direct answer: Gas hourly space velocity, or GHSV, equals volumetric gas flow per hour divided by the declared catalyst volume. The result is expressed in inverse hours. Specify gas reference conditions and the catalyst volume boundary first; otherwise two identical numbers can describe different equipment duties.
A catalytic oxidizer GHSV calculation helps industrial buyers check catalyst inventory and compare supplier proposals. It connects airflow to installed catalyst volume, but it does not independently predict VOC destruction. Temperature, solvent composition, catalyst activity and gas distribution remain essential parts of the technical selection.
This guide uses a hypothetical sizing example to explain the arithmetic and its limits. No example value is a recommended design velocity or a Yuehua project result. Final catalyst selection needs a supplier-supported performance basis for the actual exhaust and operating envelope.
Define the gas and catalyst boundaries
Identify the stream reaching the catalyst
Draw a boundary immediately upstream of the catalyst section. Include every gas stream entering that section: process exhaust, added dilution, recirculated gas and burner products where relevant. Flow measured at a collection hood or stack may cross a different boundary and require reconciliation before use.
For adsorption and desorption treatment, distinguish the large collected airflow from the concentrated desorption stream routed to oxidation. Yuehua's adsorption and catalytic oxidation system page describes that process arrangement. Size against the catalyst inlet duty rather than automatically transferring the adsorption fan rating into the calculation.
Declare what catalyst volume means
GHSV often uses the geometric volume of the catalyst bed or monolith blocks, including internal gas passages. It does not normally mean the microscopic washcoat volume. Confirm the supplier convention explicitly, particularly when comparing a packed bed with a honeycomb module or quoting catalyst by mass.
Exclude empty plenums, unrelated support layers and bypass spaces unless the stated convention specifically includes them. Record block dimensions, quantity and installed arrangement. For parallel banks, establish the active volume receiving the stated total flow; an isolated spare bank should not silently increase the credited operating volume.
Calculate reference-flow GHSV
Let Qref be the gas flow in m³/h at declared reference conditions, and Vcat the catalyst volume in m³ under the agreed definition. Then GHSVref = Qref / Vcat, with units h⁻¹. Rearranging gives Vcat = Qref / GHSVref when a supplier has justified a suitable space velocity.
Labels such as normal or standard cubic metres are incomplete without temperature, absolute pressure and moisture convention. One proposal may use dry gas at zero degrees Celsius while another uses wet gas at twenty degrees Celsius. Convert the flows to the same basis before judging which proposal supplies more catalyst per unit gas.
Assume a hypothetical wet gas flow of 20,000 m³/h referenced to 293.15 K and 101.325 kPa absolute. The proposed active catalyst comprises four blocks of 0.50 m³ each, giving 2.00 m³ total geometric volume. Reference-flow GHSV is therefore 20,000 / 2.00 = 10,000 h⁻¹.
| Input or result | Declared basis | Hypothetical value |
|---|---|---|
| Gas flow | Wet, 293.15 K, 101.325 kPa absolute | 20,000 m³/h |
| Installed active catalyst volume | Four geometric block volumes | 2.00 m³ |
| Reference-flow GHSV | 20,000 / 2.00 | 10,000 h⁻¹ |
| Nominal reference space time | 3,600 / 10,000 | 0.36 seconds |
The last row is the reciprocal on the declared reference and volume basis. It is not the measured residence time inside hot catalyst channels. Keep that distinction visible in quotation tables so a convenient conversion does not become an unsupported performance statement.
Separate reference flow from actual hot flow
For approximately ideal gas with unchanged molar flow and the same moisture basis, Qactual = Qref × (Tactual / Tref) × (Pref / Pactual). Temperatures must be absolute Kelvin and pressures absolute. Any change in water content, added streams or reaction molar flow requires the corresponding mass balance.
For the example, assume the catalyst inlet is 623.15 K, or 350 degrees Celsius, at the same absolute pressure. The actual inlet volume is 20,000 × 623.15 / 293.15, approximately 42,514 m³/h. Dividing by 2.00 m³ gives an actual-flow space velocity of approximately 21,257 h⁻¹.
Its reciprocal is approximately 0.169 seconds on the geometric-volume basis. Actual gas holdup depends on accessible channel or bed void volume, which is smaller than the geometric envelope. Temperature and flow may also change through a reacting bed. Neither reciprocal alone establishes the time available for surface reaction or the expected conversion.
The actual-flow residence time guide explains the same need to match temperature, pressure and volume boundaries for a thermal chamber. A catalyst adds surface reaction and transport effects, so a thermal chamber sizing rule cannot simply be reused as a catalyst selection criterion.
Check operating modes and catalyst condition
Compare peak flow with peak solvent load
Record minimum, normal and maximum simultaneous flow and solvent composition. Maximum flow can increase GHSV, while maximum solvent mass can create a different temperature-rise case. Use synchronized records where available. The VOC mass loading calculation guide helps distinguish concentration from kilograms of solvent per hour.
State which combinations are observed and which are conservative design assumptions. Include desorption cycles, recipe changes and simultaneous production lines. Do not infer acceptable catalyst outlet temperature from a favorable GHSV number; heat release and equipment temperature limits need their own reviewed calculation.
Evaluate distribution, blockage and aging
An average GHSV assumes the credited catalyst volume participates in treatment. Bypass leakage, uneven approach flow or plugged channels can send disproportionate flow through the remaining paths. Total geometric inventory then gives a misleading picture of local duty. Request the distribution and sealing basis with the module arrangement.
Use the catalytic oxidizer pressure-drop troubleshooting guide to separate upstream restrictions from catalyst-section losses at comparable flow. A rising pressure loss does not by itself establish chemical deactivation, and a normal pressure loss does not prove that catalyst activity remains adequate.
Ask how the proposal addresses contaminant exposure, operating hours and the agreed end-of-service activity. There is no universal aging margin suitable for every solvent and catalyst. Replacement inventory, inspection access and approved handling requirements should be part of the equipment inquiry.

For a defensible temperature screen, pair the space-velocity basis with the catalytic oxidizer light-off temperature guide. Conversion temperature only transfers when species, flow, catalyst condition and contaminants are declared.
Compare supplier proposals on one basis
Request a calculation sheet listing catalyst inlet flow and conditions, catalyst type and geometric volume, bank arrangement, GHSV convention, temperature envelope and predicted pressure loss. Require explicit exclusions for contaminants and operating modes. Two suppliers should answer against the same exhaust specification before price or catalyst quantity is compared.
Define the acceptance boundary separately: pollutant species, inlet and outlet mass flows, production modes, sampling methods and test duration. The oxidizer destruction efficiency calculation guide explains why concentration reduction alone can misrepresent performance when gas flows differ. Adapt the test to the actual catalytic system and applicable requirements.
After confirming flow and catalyst volume, review the catalytic oxidizer reaction heat and temperature rise calculation to connect solvent mass loading with gas heat capacity and the supplier's thermal operating envelope.
Frequently asked questions
What units should catalytic oxidizer GHSV use?
GHSV normally has units of inverse hours when gas flow is expressed in cubic metres per hour and catalyst volume in cubic metres. State the gas temperature, absolute pressure, moisture basis and catalyst volume definition beside the number. A value without those definitions cannot support a reliable comparison.
Is the reciprocal of GHSV the actual contact time?
Only under a matching flow and volume convention does the reciprocal represent a nominal space time. Reference-flow GHSV does not directly give hot gas residence time. Physical gas holdup depends on the accessible void volume, while reaction performance also depends on transport, temperature, composition and catalyst activity.
Does lower GHSV guarantee higher VOC destruction?
No. Lower GHSV may provide more catalyst volume per unit flow, but performance still depends on the solvent mixture, operating temperature, oxygen, distribution and catalyst condition. A numerical space velocity cannot guarantee conversion for an unspecified exhaust stream or replace an agreed emissions acceptance test.
Can total adsorption airflow size a desorption catalyst?
Use the gas stream that actually reaches the catalyst. In an adsorption and desorption system, the large collection airflow and the smaller concentrated desorption flow have different boundaries. Include dilution, recirculation and auxiliary streams crossing the catalyst inlet, and confirm the associated solvent mass and heat release.
What should a supplier confirm before catalyst purchase?
Request the flow convention, installed catalyst volume and arrangement, solvent envelope, temperature limits, pressure loss and performance basis. Identify aging assumptions, contaminant exclusions, sampling methods and replacement access. These details make the GHSV calculation reproducible and show which conditions the proposal actually covers.
